The Bard of Baghdad

Jawad al-Asadi is an Iraqi director and playwright who has spent most of his career in exile. His play, Insu Hamlit (Forget Hamlet), reinvents Shakespeare’s tragic hero in both political and Arabian terms, which, as this article in The Australian points out, is part of a greater tradition in modern Arab theatre. Al-Asadi will be taking part in The World Shakespeare Congress in Brisbane, beginning July 16th. This year the Congress has specifically focused on Shakespeare’s role in cultures that speak Arabic and follow Islam.
